Craving Nicki C’s

Ever go to a restaurant two days in a row? My first time was this weekend, when my bf introduced me to Nicki C’s for lunch, and then again the following day for breakfast for the second time. For lunch, we had a complimentary seasoned bread basket, the Brucshetta, a delicious Caprese Salad, and the best fish tacos I have ever had. After chatting with our server, we learned that Nicki C’s was actually known for their breakfast, so we had to try it, and it was goooood! They have fresh squeezed orange juice, which tasted incredible mixed with cranberry juice. My bf had the juevos y chorizo (eggs scrambled with chorizo, onion & cilantro, served with corn tortillas), which he ate in what seemed like a minute. I had the chiliquiles verde (eggs, tortilla strips, avocado, cilantro, cheddar cheese, and verde sauce) with a side of fruit. We shared the banana walnut pancakes with butter and maple syrup, which I had with a nice cup of black tea. Needless to say, we found a new breakfast and lunch spot, and I’m sure we’ll be back to Nicki C’s soon to try their, you guessed it, dinner!

Craving Chocboard

7 May

When we’re in another country, isn’t it common to, at some point, crave food that isn’t typically served in all of the restaurants around town? In Manila, after having Filipino food almost every meal, I finally had the opportunity to go to Chocboard, which I had been hearing so much about. Just a block away from SM Manila Mall, in Ermita, Chocboard offers a variety of vegetarian meal options, refreshing beverages, and tasty treats. It’s a new trendy and hip cafe and bakery that breaks the mold of the run of the mill places to eat in town with cool music playing, wi-fi, and an ambiance that invites us in, and makes us not want to leave. I had tried both of the pastas on the menu, one with tomato sauce and one with white sauce, both served with yummy garlic bread. Chocboard also serves the best orange juice I think I’ve ever had. I must have ordered three glasses throughout the evening, it was that good. If it wasn’t for being being half way around the world from home, I would definitely be a regular Chocboard.

Craving Driftwood Cafe

Could something taste so good that it prompts us to eat another meal despite having already eaten? If the answer is no, then try going to Driftwood Cafe in South Lake Tahoe’s Heavenly Village and maybe that answer might change. After ordering and eating a late room-serviced breakfast, my weekend roomie, Dreams, my bf, and I, met up with the rest of the gang for their first meal of the day. While three of us had already eaten, we figured we’d just join the other six on a short walk from the Harvey’s Hotel & Casino to the Driftwood Cafe for the company. After looking at the menu; however, Dreams and my bf couldn’t resist ordering more food. Still feeling full from the oatmeal, fresh fruit cocktail, and fresh banana and blueberry muffins I had for breakfast, I ordered a black tea. Every one’s food came out and since all my friends love to share, I had a bite of Jax’s waffles with strawberries on the left of me, a bite of Dreams’ veggie Quiche across from me, and a bite of my bf’s pancakes with bananas and strawberries on the right of me. I would have been happy ordering any one of those options surrounding me, but I didn’t think I had any more room to eat… I definitely thought wrong because I ended up trying Marshall’s broccoli soup with garlic bread that was passed down from the other end of the table. That had to be the best broccoli soup I’ve ever had. Suddenly, it was as if I hadn’t eaten anything all day as I immediately ordered a cup for myself. I had to let every one else try the soup who hadn’t already, it would have been a crime to keep any one from knowing how good it was. After eating, we all agreed, the Driftwood Cafe is definitely on the crave list. Next time we’re ever in town, that broccoli soup has my name written all over it.

Food Soul Mate Double Date At Blue Jam Cafe

What’s cooler than having a food soul mate? Having a food soul mate whose boyfriend is our boyfriend’s food soul mate. While driving down Melrose in Los Angeles, my bf and I saw swarms of people out on the street. We wondered what was going on and saw a restaurant and it’s name that read Blue Jam Cafe. With that many people waiting to eat there, we figured it must be great. After meeting up Face and Marshall, who both coincidentally frequent the Blu Jam Cafe, we all headed there to get some grub. What’s great about Blu Jam is that is serves breakfast all day, although they close at 5pm everyday. Not to mention, this cafe serves a variety of vegan and vegetarian options. While Face and I both ordered The combo soup and half salad, our guys both ordered the Brunch Burger, which wasn’t a coincidence since we’re Food Soul Mates! We all took advantage of the breakfast-all-day menu and shared the Blueberry Pancakes with fresh blueberries, powdered sugar, butter and syrup. I love beets, so the salad that I ordered was the Beets & Greens with arugula, fresh beets, goat cheese, black currants, candied walnuts (on the side) and a citrus vinaigrette. The soup that I ordered was the Homemade Vegan Split Pea Soup, which is probably the best split pea soup I have ever had. Although we didn’t have any blue jam while dining and Blu Jam, we did get to listen to some cool jams like The Beatles “Hey Jude” and George Harrison’s “Got My Mind Set On You.” We now know why this place is so popular, it is definitely a brunch hot spot for more than a few good reasons.

Dim Sum Mania

What always good for brunch? Dim Sum and you know it! Over the weekend, a group of us went to Hong Kong Lounge in San Francisco at the suggestion of my beautiful Taiwanese Barbie connection, Bananniekins. You can’t be in SF and not eat dim sum, that’s gotta be against the law. But don’t take my word for it. Also, don’t ever let me order for the table, you won’t ever have enough space for all the dishes. Actually what table? When all the food came, I couldn’t even see it anymore, it was completely covered. I’m glad that one of us in the group can speak Mandarin (not I, although, I am attempting to learn) as in my experience, English can be limiting in the best and most authentic dim sum restaurants. Now; however, there are paper menus that can be fill out by writing the quantity next to what you would like to order. After handing the completed menu to the server, some one almost always comes back to ask us, “Are you sure every one can eat all this? Food is too much for you.” When this is said, this person has obviously never met me or my friends… Some of the highlights of the meal include the sliced fish porridge, vegetables and mushrooms in noodle roll, stuffed eggplant, Chinese broccoli with oyster sauce, shrimp and chives dumpling, shrimp in noodle roll, steamed special clam, shrimp dumplings, clams with black bean sauce and my favorite desserts: sponge cake, steamed custard buns, fried sesame balls, and sweet tofu. My stomach is growling right now just writing this post. Thank you dim sum for being invented, my life wouldn’t be the same without you.

Craving Café Madeleine

What’s better than your favorite meal at your favorite café, in your hometown? I flew to San Francisco Wednesday night to visit my family. In the famous Union Square, I had lunch with my brother and nephew at Café Madeleine on O’farrell St. and Market. Whenever I’m in the City, I usually always have an opportunity to grab a bite at this very familiar café that I often frequented when I used to live in SF, which is conveniently located across the street from the Four Seasons Hotel. This café has one of the best Cobb salads ever, with fresh blue cheese, cherry tomatoes, avocado, and a hard boiled egg. I ordered it with no chicken or bacon with a substitute of balsamic vinaigrette dressing instead of Ranch. This cafe also has the most amazing pastries and desserts, and the last time I visited my family the weekend after Thanksgiving, they ran out what I usually like to order, so I made up for lost times and got two of my favorite desserts: the Tiramisu, which is made fresh with Mascarpone cheese and coffee soaked ladyfingers and the triple chocolate mouse, which consists of layers of dark chocolate, milk chocolate, and white chocolate mouse topped with white chocolate shavings. Sooo good! This is the perfect meal before a day full of shopping for great after Christmas bargains.

Craving Einstein Bros Bagels

9 Dec

What is the perfect Sunday afternoon bite? Bagels! It was a perfect day to get out and grab some bagels to go. I went to Einstein Bros on Foothill in Pasadena and ordered Nova Lox (on Plain) Bagels for me and my boyfriend. I ordered another Asiago bagel with sundried tomato schmear and 4 doggy bagels for the kiddos. The doggy bagels are beef flavored and of course, they loved them! I loved my bagels too! The Nova Lox bagel has just enough cream cheese, lox, onions, tomato and capers. Whenever I crave bagels, Einstein Bros never fails.
